Medium and High Power Motors Market Analysis, Development and Demand Forecast to 2020 by P&S Market Research

(EnergyIndustry.Net, March 22, 2016 ) The growth of the market is supported by encouragement for energy efficient and premium efficient motors usage, and increasing replacement of less efficient and old electric motors. Whereas, the factors restraining the growth of medium and high power motors market are high price of energy efficient motors and price fluctuations of raw materials.

An electric motor is an electric machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy through the interaction between magnetic field and winding currents. The mechanical energy is used for various applications such as rotating a pump, fan or blower, driving a compressor and lifting materials. Electric motors produce rotary force (torque) and linear force, and generate usable mechanical powers. These are different from the devices, such as loudspeakers, that convert electrical energy into motion energy, which are known as transducers and actuators. The major parts of a motor include stator, windings, air gap, rotor and commutator.

Electric motors work on three principles – electrostatic, magnetic and piezoelectric. The different types of electric motors include direct current (DC) motors, alternating current (AC) motors and other motors. DC motors include shunt motors, series motor, compounded motor, separately excited motor and permanent magnet DC motor. AC motors include induction motor and synchronous motor. The other category of motors include stepper motor, reluctance motor, hysteresis motor, universal motor and brushless motor. Energy-efficient motors have improved design, which helps to increase operational efficiency compared, to standard designed motors. The improved design is mainly focused on minimizing intrinsic motor losses. The improvement is achieved by the use of longer core, thicker wires, low-loss silicon steel, thinner lamination, copper bars (instead of aluminum bars) in rotor, smaller air gap between rotor and stator and others.

On the basis of output power, the market can be broadly categorized into medium power motors and high power motors. The output of medium power motors is between 0.740 kilo watt (KW) and 200 kilo watt (KW), and the output of high power motors is greater than 200 kilo watt (KW). Based on the input power mode, the medium and high power motors market can be categorized as single phase alternating current (AC) motors, three phase AC motors, brushless direct current (DC) motors, and brushed DC motors.

On the basis of efficiency standards defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission, the medium and high power motors market can be categorized as standard efficiency (IE1), high efficiency (IE2), premium efficiency (IE3), super premium efficiency (IE4), and non- regulated. The end-users of the medium and high power motors market include industrial machinery, commercial, motor vehicle manufacturers, aerospace, and HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) manufacturers. The industrial machinery end-user category comprises medical equipment, petrochemical and oil refining, mining and construction equipment, food and beverage, and pulp and paper industry.

Some of the competitors in medium and high power motors market are Danaher Motion LLC, Regal Beloit Corp., Brook Crompton UK Ltd., ARC Systems Inc., Johnson Electric Holdings Ltd., Siemens AG, Baldor Electric Company Inc., Asmo Co. Ltd., Ametek Inc., Franklin Electric Co., Inc., Rockwell Automation Inc., and Allied Motion Technologies Inc.
